FAQs
Library Card Questions
What can I do with my library card?
There are so many things you can do with your library card! Your card gives you access to:
Our Circulating Collections, which includes books, books on CD, DVDs, park passes, sports equipment, and Chromebooks
Databases (with your PIN)
Circulating items from other libraries in MidYork
Libby , our catalog of ebooks and audiobooks
How many books can I take out? How many movies?
For an adult card, you can take out up to 30 books on your card and 5 DVDs.
For a children's card, we recommend you start with up to only 3 books at a time, but eventually, the limit is also 30 books. You cannot check out DVDs on a juvenile card.
Do I need a card to return my books?
You do not! You can put them into our drop box if we are closed, or come in and set them at the front desk.
I lost my library card!
Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. It costs 50 cents for a replacement card. Bring your ID to verify that you are the one trying to replace your card.
How old does my child have to be to get a library card?
We leave this up to the discretion of the parents. If you believe that your child can be trusted with a library card, we will issue one to them.
What is my child allowed to take out at the library?
Your child has the opportunity to access a wide array of materials with their library card. We are very glad that you are encouraging your child to explore different topics and experience different worlds through books. Part of our responsibility to the community is to provide materials of many interests and points of view. It is not the library’s policy to decide what ideas your child should be exposed to, therefore, we hope you will continue to participate in the learning process by helping your child select materials and by sharing them at home.
We provide the alternatives. You make the choices.
General Library Use Questions
Do I need a library card to come to the library?
Everyone is welcome to come to the library, regardless of if they have a card or not.
What can I do in the library?
There is so much you can do here! For quiet time by yourself, you can use the library as a temporary workspace. You can grab a book, do our puzzle, draw and create, use the computers and WiFi, do history research, or see our in house collections.
For more social needs, you can have meetings here, attend a program, play board games, or enjoy a quiet chat. We also have toys for the kids and through programming, ample opportunity to socialize.
Do I need to be quiet in the library?
In our main area where the children's room is, we allow people to speak at a normal speaking voice, so it can get a bit loud at times. In the older part of the building, we have quiet study, where it is encouraged to whisper or speak softly.
Computer Use/ Internet Questions
What is the protocol for using the computers?
To log in, you use your library card barcode. This gives you 60 minutes on the computer. If there is no one waiting to use the computers, we can extend your time by an additional 60 minutes for a total of 2 hours total screentime.
If you do not have a MidYork library card, you can get a guest pass for the computer from our front desk by showing a valid ID.

Miscellaneous Questions
Why can't I check out any items? Why can't I get into my account online?
Unfortunately, we still have fines at our library in order to keep our doors open. If your fines exceed $5 or you have 10 or more overdue items, your account will be locked. This means you cannot check out any items or use our computers until these conditions are remedied.
You may also have to "renew your privilege", which is just calling or coming in to update or confirm your contact information. This needs to be done every 3 years.
Do you accept book donations?
