Full job description:

Library Aide is a part time position, 16-20 hours a week with weekday and weekend shifts, $14.20/ hour

EMPLOYEE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and professionally with staff, patrons, and external
    vendors.
  • Proven capacity to perform tasks accurately within a dynamic and occasionally disruptive
    environment.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Adherence to library policies and procedures.
  • Competence in working autonomously.

DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION:

Reporting to the Library Director, this role entails executing
various circulation tasks, directing patron inquiries, as well as inspecting and managing materials for
cleaning, repair, withdrawal, and reordering.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience:
    • One year of prior work experience, including a background in customer service.
    •  Basic familiarity with library operations and procedures
  • Education:
    • Completion of high school or an equivalent qualification.
  • Functional Abilities:
    • Proficiency in operating a computer and acquiring familiarity with various library-related
      software.
    • Competence in using an iPad and handling cash transactions responsibly.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Capability to work with alphabetical and numerical systems.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Regularly engaged in standing, walking, and sitting.
    • Capable of lifting 30 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, and pulling
      objects exceeding 50 pounds.
    • Reach and handle tasks effectively.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS ROLE

  • Assist in the circulation of library materials.
  • Thorough understanding and enforcement of library check-out procedures and policies.
  • Facilitate book and materials check-out for patrons and manage the return process.
  • Interact with patrons to assist with holds and content downloads from Libby.
  • Process daily deliveries from Mid York, including notifying patrons of requested materials availability.
  • Register patrons for library cards and verify account information, addressing any fines or bills as necessary.
  • Process hold requests for both local and Mid York System patrons.
  • Assist in maintaining the collection, including identifying materials in need of repair, cleaning, or reordering under the Library Director’s guidance.
  • Aid patrons with technology and research inquiries.
  • Uphold computer and technology policies and assist patrons with basic computer functions.
  • Assist patrons with copier and fax machine operation, including collecting associated fees.
  • Provide guidance to patrons on navigating the online Mid York catalog.
  • Aid patrons in locating in-house library materials.
  • Offer assistance with microfilm collections and microfilm machines.
  • Contribute to a clean and inviting library environment.
  • Properly shelve returned materials and maintain organized shelves in the stacks.
  • Keep rotating displays tidy and appealing.
  • Maintain the periodicals and DVD sections.
  • Ensure cleanliness and orderliness of staff spaces.
  • Manage minor messes and spills in the absence of the custodian.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for programs in the Community Room.
  • Encourage patrons to adhere to established codes of conduct.
